I believe in visualising
the power of being positive...
...by telling compelling stories,
in an honest way.
I believe the best way to achieve this
is with motion graphics.
Chris Kelly,
Motion designer.

The act of telling stories is the most powerful way to share
abstract ideas with each other. I believe motion graphics &
graphic design can use narrative to visualise those ideas &
transform them into positive actions.

INQ Mobile.
Motion Designer, 2011.
Mobile phones are at the centre of many young peoples lives. Motion within mobile applications offers subtle indications of where they are within the app & where they can go next, easing its use & supporting their digital lives. I worked at INQ Mobile in their London office as a motion graphics expert. I liaised with designers & developers to introduce motion to their new & existing Android apps. Flash(AS2) was used to create interactive prototypes as a proof of concept that ran on handsets. This included loading screens, transitions betweens apps & interactions between different app elements. I also worked closely with sales, marketing & upper management to produce business to business presentation material showcasing INQ products using After Effects, Flash & Keynote.

Electric Picture Company.
Motion Designer, 2008-2010.
I believe DVD & Blu-ray menus act as a powerful introduction to a story. The menu, along with the title sequence, are the first moving images someone sees & I take this as an opportunity to create a bridge between their normal life & the journey they are about to take. I designed menu interfaces & motion graphics for DVD & Blu-ray titles. Working alongside the head designer to produce unique graphics suiting the mood & pace of the individual title. I pushed the limits of the Blu-ray format to produce the most visually impressive menus possible liaising closely with developers. Content included opera from the Royal Opera House & violent far eastern horror from Asia Extreme Cinema.

Flash on the Beach 2011 Logo
Flash on the Beach.
Assistant, 2007-2010.
Flash on the Beach is an annual design conference bringing the best minds in design & development to share, educate & inspire. Over the last 5 years my role at the conference has become increasingly integral. My duties now include: introducing speakers on stage, closing stages & announcing conference competitions. I am also part of the team organising & running the FOTB Elevator Pitches: 20 speakers, 3 minutes each, in 1 hour on 1 stage. flashonthebeach.com

Russ Drage Architects.
Web design & development, 2007-2011.
Russ Drage Architects is the best example of several Flash based websites I have single handily designed & developed. These projects allowed me the opportunity to work closely with the client from pitching ideas, liaising & presenting the final product to updates & maintenance there after. I used Actionscript 2 alongside my own mini XML database to allow for short loading times, images & copy to be updated with ease as well as address individual clients SEO requirements. Russ is also a truly fantastic client. russdrage-architects.com

Temporary Pleasures.
Graphic design, 2010-2011.
If designers had journals, this is what they would look like. Temporary Pleasures acts as a diary in the form of a monthly poster exploring the events of that month with type, colour & composition as well as words. This ongoing project gives me the level of freedom to explore aspects of design often out of bounds for most clients & ultimately supports my professional work in unexpected ways. Connection Series.
Graphic design, 2011.
Relationships are complicated: Maintaining meaningful connections with other people can be confusing & hard. The 'Connection Series' explores a set of words and phrases that I believe underpin all the connections we make each other. Each image starts with a symbol, a symbol of a journey, continuation & renewal, that symbol is a circle. Around this symbol, a linear narrative is created to connect the images to each other, the visual elements used (colour, positioning etc) within one image are present within the following images as an echo. Relationships can be complicated, but with your own set of markers, long term & meaningful connections with other people can always be achieved. Connection Series on Behance.

Road Trip USA.
Motion design & video production, 2011.
This was more than a holiday, it was a tough journey that took us further away from home than we had ever been, driving for 19 hour stretches across cities, deserts & open highways. Everywhere we went, our cameras came too. We avoided tourists & lived with the locals. We pushed ourselves mentally & physically to capture some of the image within this short film. 7 months of saving, organising hotels, car hire & buying tickets. 2602 miles driven across 4 states... This was our 3 week road trip of the American West coast. Starting in California, then north to San Francisco, Portland OR (via several small towns), then South via Klamath Falls to Nevada for the Burning Man festival 'Rites of Passage'. We laughed, we argued & we survived it. We did it.
